Although we love festivals, this event doesn't fall under the festival category; instead, it spotlights the athletes of the Highland Games and the Scottish Heavy Events.
What are Scottish Heavy Athletics
Scottish Heavy Athletics, also known as the Highland Games Heavy Events, are a set of traditional strength and endurance competitions that originated in the Scottish Highlands. These events showcase the raw power and athleticism of participants, both men and women athletes known as the "heavies." The key Heavy Athletic events include:
- Caber Toss: In this iconic event, athletes attempt to flip a tall, heavy log end over end. The goal is not distance but to achieve a perfect "caber turn," where the caber lands straight from the thrower's perspective.
- Stone Putting: Similar to shot put, competitors throw a heavy stone for distance.
- Weight for Height: Athletes toss weights over a horizontal bar for height. The higher the bar, the more challenging the event becomes.
- Weight for Distance: Participants throw a weight (usually a metal ball attached to a handle) for maximum distance.
- Hammer Throw: In this event, athletes swing a heavy weight (the hammer) around and release it for distance, similar to the Olympic hammer throw.
- Sheaf Toss: Competitors use a pitchfork to toss a burlap or straw-filled bag over a bar for height.
These Heavy Athletics not only showcase incredible strength and skill but also pay homage to Scotland's historical agricultural and labor traditions.
